Selfishness

Human beings are fundamentally conditioned to be self-centered by their circumstances. No sane being would leave their kid behind to rescue another in the event of a fire where they can only rescue a child at a time, for example. But it doesn’t mean the other kid would be left to burn — Empathy. Selfishness is a survival instinct triggered by circumstances, it’s part of being human and should not be demonized, because its existence doesn’t negate the existence of altruism — two sides of the same coin. Empathy should be encouraged to put selfishness in check.
