Consumerism is the bane of society, fostered by credit card/loans systems, ever since it was created post 1950s. Like Keyenes prediction of cheap capital to 15 hrs working week, I suspect he underestimates capitalism's ability to always finds ways to reinvent itself. And as long as the banks and "bullshit jobs" (David Graeber) are around - work and debts prevails.
